Learning

Chaplains who build their ministry of pastoral care on relationships by being professional in their behaviour and are based on genuine concern for people will radiate the presence of Jesus.

As surgeons need to be highly trained, so they heal rather than harm; those of us who intend to grow in being partners in God’s redemptive work of pastoral care and chaplaincy, we need to undergo the cleansing and liberating of heart and soul so that we will be instruments of God’s new creation.

Be aware of our own emotions, things that are hidden, things we need to work on, triggers that may come up during caring for someone else, our needs and desires. Ensure that at no times we care through these things, but we seek guidance so that we can be restored and be all who God wants to be.

If we intend to guide, nurture, sustain, heal, reconcile, liberate and celebrate (the definition of pastoral care), then we need to be open to guided, nurtured, sustained, healed, reconciled, liberated and celebrated ourselves.
